MP names Ryan Giggs as super-injunction football star

From Twitter to House of Commons in 140 characters or less

Ryan Giggs has been named by a LibDem MP as the footballer behind a super injunction issued to the press in England and Wales in an effort to suppress details about an alleged affair.

John Hemming, MP, speaking in the House of Commons this afternoon, revealed the identity of Giggs. He had previously been known only as 'CTB' in court papers.

Manchester United's greatest footballer has been widely named on Twitter as the man at the centre of the super-injunction storm. Wikipedia has also added information about the gagging order to Giggs' entry on the online encyclopedia.

Earlier today, the Sun newspaper failed in its attempt to have the injunction lifted.

Just yesterday, Scottish newspaper the Sunday Herald published a picture of the footballer on its front page.

By this morning the Prime Minister admitted that current privacy laws were "unsustainable" and "unfair" in light of online tools such as Twitter, where damaging celebrity gossip seemingly runs free despite gagging orders.

Giggs had tried to prevent his identity being revealed in a story that alleges that the football star had a "sexual relationship" with former Big Brother contestant Imogen Thomas. ®
