Win free tickets to Hadoop Summit

Open source Big Data confab calling

Competition The Register is offering its beloved readers the chance to win free tickets to Yahoo!'s fourth-annual Hadoop Summit, a one-day confab dedicated to the open source distributed number-crunching platform.

This year's summit is slated for June 29 at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Santa Clara, California. The Reg is offering five free tickets, and one of them could be yours.

Hadoop is an Apache project, but Yahoo! its largest contributor. Rumors indicate that the company may spin off its Hadoop engineering team to create a company that would challenge the likes of Cloudera, a Silicon Valley startup that offers support and services for the platform.

In 2004, Google published a pair of research papers describing its distributed file system (GFS) and its framework for distributed data-crunching (MapReduce). Using these papers, Nutch crawler developer Doug Cutting bootstrapped Hadoop, naming the project after his son's yellow stuffed elephant. He was soon hired by Yahoo!, but has since moved to Cloudera.

The platform is now used not only by Yahoo!, but also by Facebook, Twitter, and other big-name web outfits, as well as a growing number of enterprises. The summit will bring together users and contributors spanning the length and breadth of the project. "Whether you are already running and managing a Hadoop installation, developing Hadoop-based applications or exploring how to adopt Apache Hadoop for your business, the summit provides a unique opportunity to gain deep insights into the world of Hadoop from the company that pioneered it," Yahoo! says. "Learn about interesting and relevant real-world applications and find out about the latest Big Data research."

We have five free Summit tickets to give away. To enter the prize drawing, send an email to hadooptix@theregister.co.uk before 5pm Pacific time on Friday, May 20. Mark the subject of the email "Hadoop Summit" and please include your full name and a valid email address.
