Yahoo! buys! TV-sharing! startup! IntoNow!

'Why is everything here completely pointless?', asks Mike Teevee

Yahoo! has bought television 'check-in' startup IntoNow for an undisclosed sum.

IntoNow, which was founded by one-time Google exec Adam Cahan, was developed to work with a mobile phone app that flags up TV programmes being aired by scanning the audio waves from television sets.

Once the app indexes those programmes in a database, users can then share what they're watching on TV with people on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Yahoo!'s decision to buy IntoNow and plug its users into the likes of Facebook and Twitter represents yet another signal that the ailing web company has lost huge ground online to social networking upstarts in recent years.

In the past the purple portal would arguably have done everything in its power to keep users slotted into its own online estate. ®
