Victorian cops collar camera cooker

The E-Crime Squad of Victoria Police has arrested a 36-year-old man for tampering with infringement data from red light cameras and speed cameras.

The police allege the unnamed man, from the suburb of Craigeburn, altered more than 67,000 infringement records.

In its statement, the Victorian police says it was investigating allegations that the records were changed in the systems of the outsourced service provider that manages the cameras and associated systems.

The police state that “the data changes have had no impact on any infringement issued in relation to the speed or red light camera system. No infringements have been issued to motorists with incorrect data and there is no ongoing impact to any infringements to be issued.”

While the statement says the changes were made by a “former employee” of the service provider, it doesn’t tell us whether the offences were committed before or after the individual left the provider’s employment.

The individual arrested has been released pending further investigation, with Victoria Police saying he may face charges of “unauthorised modification of data under the Crimes Act”.
