Bahrain Grand Prix may be postponed

Updated The Bahrain Grand Prix is likely to be postponed until the end of the season following continuing protests against the government in the state.

Testing was due to start there in early next month ahead of the race 13 March. But with a backdrop of dead protesters and threats of disruption to the race, a delay looks inevitable.

Bernie Ecclestone will talk to Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa before making any decision. An official statement is expected later today.

Red Bull driver Mark Webber reportedly said at the weekend: "It's probably not the best time to go there for a sporting event... They have bigger things, bigger priorities."

At least six people have been killed during demonstrations in Bahrain, which are entering their second week. ®

The GP opener has been cancelled, and the season will kick off with the Aussie Grand Prix on March 27. Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa said "Our nation's priority is on overcoming tragedy, healing divisions and rediscovering the fabric that draws this country together; reminding the world of the very best that Bahrain is capable of as a nation once again united." Which is not neccessarily something you want to try and pull off under the full glare of the world's media.
