Acer unveils big-screen smartphone

Android-powered Iconia to take on iPhone?

MWC 2011 Acer today made much of its new Iconia's Smart's screen, a big 4.8in, 1024 x 480 boy.

That sounds impressive, but it's no "retina display" to rival the iPhone 4 display.

The Smart's screen has a density of roughly 235 pixels per inch, well below the iPhone's 326ppi.

Still, the Smart runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread on a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor, packs in tri-band HSPA 3G, 2.4GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS and an FM radio.

It has a 2Mp video call camera, and a second, 8Mp job on the back for stills and 720p video. It'll play 720p content out through its HDMI port, but not higher resolution footage.

It's not bad looking and could be a good mid-range contender if Acer gets the price right. Unfortunately, it's not yet saying how much the Smart will cost.

But it did say the phone will be out in May. ®
