Hands up at the desktop virtualisation checkpoint

Let us grill you in our annual Reg reader survey

Tech Panel We know from workshops and surveys that many of you are considering what to do with your desktops at the moment.

Having given Vista a miss and/or put the usual upgrade cycle on hold for a while due to economic pressure, things have got a bit behind on the modernisation front.

That’s not to say that desktop estates are necessarily falling to pieces, but whether it’s XP end of life, the creeping up of support and compatibility issues, or simply a desire to stave off general obsolescence, most IT departments are going to have to do something in the not too distant future.

So what are you going to do? Windows 7 seems to now be pretty well accepted as being ‘ready’ for prime time deployment, so a migration based on that might be something you are considering. As you’re looking at options though, you can’t help coming across the various forms of desktop virtualisation.

But are virtual desktops appropriate for your users? If so, which ones and through what mix of technology? And what are the practicalities of going down the desktop virtualisation route?

Help us to explore some of these questions by completing our latest survey on the topic. ®
