Testy Turkey re-blocks YouTube over naughty hotel romp clip

Make up your mind

Turkey has reinstated its block on YouTube – this time because it is showing a naughty clip of an opposition politician in a hotel bedroom with a female party member.

Access to YouTube from Turkey was reinstated at the weekend after clips insulting the country's founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk were removed on copyright grounds. According to Turkish law, it is illegal to insult Ataturk.

Google then decided the vids were not infringing anyone's copyright after all, and put them back on the site.

The ad giant told El Reg: "When we looked into this, we found the videos were not, in fact, copyright-infringing, so we have put them back up, though they continue to be restricted within Turkey. We hope very much that our users in Turkey can continue to enjoy YouTube."

But a court in Ankara ruled yesterday that Turkey's telecoms ministry should again block access, Bloomberg reported.

Turkey has done its best to stop its citizens accessing YouTube since May 2008.

Earlier this year it added Google Docs, Google Books and Google Translate to the blacklist - although it appears this was just a mistaken extension of the YouTube ban. ®
