Virtualization is big, getting bigger and - for those readers who’ve been on the virtualization trail for some time - the benefits can be significant.

True, server consolidation is seen as one of the most important drivers of virtualization across the board – with activity in Windows environments running significantly ahead of that on Linux or other platforms. But an increasing number of companies are much more focused on the long term architectural, management and procurement benefits.

the majority are focusing on virtualizing application servers, web servers, departmental apps and their web apps – whilst the commercial applications and workloads are taking a distinct back seat.
