MoD awards BT £810m contract extension

'If you would like to start a war, please press one'

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has extended its contract with BT to provide fixed telecommunications services.

The Defence Fixed Telecommunications Service (DFTS) contract between BT and the MoD was signed in 1997 and extended in 2005 to run until 2012. It will now continue until 2015 in an extension under existing provisions worth £810m. The extension was announced to Parliament yesterday by Minister for Defence Equipment, Support and Technology Peter Luff.

The DFTS is a public-private partnership between the MoD and BT and connects 1,650 MoD sites in the UK, Germany and Cyprus. It replaced various legacy networks operated by the separate services and the central MoD. ®
