Stripped-down IE9 interface leaks in Russia

Less is more

Internet Explorer 9 is getting a stripped down interface, if a screenshot leaked online is to be believed.

The next IE will feature a back button, a combined URL and search box at the top, and do away with "Favorites, "Suggested Sites," and "Get More Add-Ons" items, according to Microsoft watcher Mary-Jo Foley here.

The peak came courtesy of a post to Microsoft Russia's web site on August 25, which has been removed.

IE9's interface has not been released to developers despite the delivery of four developer previews. Microsoft plans to unveil the interface at the browser's official beta launch on September 15 in San Francisco, California.

According to Foley, the interface will feature back buttons and the combined search and address bar but the numerous menu items of previous version have been consolidated.

Users will be able to go straight from their Windows task bar to "recognized" or "protected" sites without having to fired up IE, and there will be something called "tear-off tabs" that build on Aero Snap in Windows to view two pages side by side – a feature already found in Firefox and Safari. ®
