Opera lands 'Carakan' JavaScript engine on mobiles

Betas Opera Mobile 10.1 for Nokia S/60

Opera has brought its revamped "Carakan" JavaScript engine and Vega graphics library to smartphones, releasing a beta incarnation of Opera Mobile 10.1 for Nokia's Symbian-based S60 platform.

Carakan debuted with version 10.50 of Opera's desktop browser, significantly boosting JavaScript performance. In a blog post, Opera boasted that it's now Opera Mobile's "turn to feel the speed." But at this point, JIT compilation isn't available with the mobile incarnation of Carakan.

With the addition of Vega, the Opera Mobile 10.1 beta offers support for such CSS3 modules as 2D Transforms, border-radius, border-image, and box-shadow. What's more, the beta brings the W3C Geolocation API to the company's flagship mobile browser.

The company also offers the Opera Mini browser, using proxy servers to compress webpages for phones with low-bandwidth, low memory, or a parent company that refuses to allow interpreted code outside its own browser. Yesterday, Opera Mini was officially released on Google's Android platform.

For developers, Opera has kindly put together a table showing which web specifications are supported by each of its browsers, from its desktop browser (Opera 10.50 and Opera 10.60) to various Mobile versions to Mini. The table – available here – covers HTML5, CSS, web storage, graphics, geolocations, web workers, and more.

The Opera Mobile 10.1 beta is available for smartphones based on the third and fifth editions of Symbian/S60. You can download it here, and the company encourages you to provide feedback here. ®
