GFI wraps its hands around Sunbelt

Tech acquisition marks security biz consolidation

Maltese security firm GFI Software has acquired Sunbelt Software and its Vipre line of anti-malware technology. Terms of the deal - announced Tuesday - were not disclosed.

The technology-focused acquisition will allow GFI to enhance its range of email and web security products, which focus on meeting the web security needs of SMEs with Sunbelt's line of security software.

"We see this investment in Sunbelt and its VIPRE technology as an excellent opportunity to increase our install base, drive the software globally through our international partner channel and also build our consumer market, which has a powerful drag-along effect on the SME and SoHo markets,” explained Walter Scott, chief exec of GFI.

Sunbelt’s software distribution business, which started 16 years ago and is separate from its software development business, will be divested and possibly sold.

Tampa Bay, Florida-based Sunbelt is most known for its anti-spyware technology but these days its Vipre technology provides protection against a range of malware threats. The firm has long punched well above its weight in the volume and quality of its security research, a commitment bolstered by the recent hire of UK-based researcher Chris Boyd (AKA Paperghost). ®
