iPad not hindering Mac sales

Quite the reverse

Apple's other product line - you remember the Mac, don't you? - is apparently doing rather well, despite the fact that the iPad and iPhone 4 are getting all the attention at the moment.

So says long-time Apple watcher Gene Munster, of investment company Piper Jaffray, after taking a look at retail sales data from market research firm NPD. Munster wrote up his findings in a note sent out to investors, and Business Insider has given them a broader audience.

Munster's key conclusion: Mac sales through US retail outlets are up 37 per cent year on year for the three months to the end of May.

BI notes that Wall Street expects Mac sales to rise 19 per cent in the three months to the end of June, a month in which the company shipped a radically slimmer Mac Mini - read Reg Hardware's review here - that seems unlikely.

The point is that this rise comes as rather a lot of folk - 3m as of late June - have bought iPads already and rather more are expected to do so in the coming months. ®
