Amazon.co.uk takes on Tesco

Mmmm... beer and books

Amazon's UK tentacle is upping its range of goods for sale to include thousands of grocery and food items and lashings of lovely booze.

The site, famous for books and DVDs, already had a wide range of products including gadgets, computers, clothes and car stuff.

There will be 22,000 items from brands including Kraft, Nestle, Pepsi and Proctor and Gamble.

The etail monster is pitching the store as the easy way to buy bulk goods like nappies, washing powder and sweet, delicious beer.

The site still needs a little fine tuning - the beer section currently includes Old Jamaica Ginger Beer, which everyone knows is a mixer.

Although it offers only a disappointing nine lagers, the site stocks an impressive 11 types of stout, 38 bitters and ales and 97 "beers of the world". No beers of Jupiter or other planets are offered.

It also claims to stock 70 types of fizzy wine, 248 sorts of ordinary wine and 39 spirit brands.
