Gary McKinnon's mum not prime minister

Another shock result

Janis Sharp - Gary McKinnon's mother - was pushed into last place in Blackburn, where she was standing as an independent.

Although never expecting to win, Sharp was running to increase awareness of civil liberties which she believes are under increasing attack.

Standing against former Home Secretary Jack Straw Sharp managed only 173 votes - behind another independent Grace Astley with 238 votes, UKIP with 942, and Busha Irfan of Blackburn with 1,424 votes.

The BNP got 2,158, LibDems 6,918, and the Conservatives got 11,895 votes leaving Jack Straw with 21,751.

The result means Janis not only came last but lost her deposit.

We're still waiting for nine constituencies to declare a winner. ®
