HP India probed by taxman

HP is under investigation by India's Directorate of Revenue Intelligence for allegedly dodging $322m in taxes.

The ink giant should have paid import duty on computers, printers and scanners which it brought into the country to sell there, the authorities claim.

Sources told the Wall Street Journal that the results of an 18-month investigation were handed to HP at the end of April. HP can now contest the findings.

A spokesman for the company told the paper: "HP India refutes the DRI's position and will challenge its claims through the judicial process."

HP is also under investigation for allegedly bribing its way to winning a contract with Russian prosecutors. German authorities are also investigating because they believe a German subsidiary was used to channel the money. ®
