Opera unleashes final Opera Mini 5 and Opera Mobile 10

Yes, Jesus Phone Mini still in limbo

Opera has released final versions of its Opera Mini 5 browser for Java-based phones and BlackBerries and its Opera Mobile 10 browser for Symbian S60-based devices and Windows Mobile phones.

Opera Mini is the Norwegian outfit's low-bandwidth mobile browser - a lightweight Opera incarnation that taps into proxy servers that compress webpages before they're sent down to the phone - whereas Opera Mobile is the company's full-fledged offering. Both offer tabbed browsing, speed dial, a password manager and a bookmarks interface.

You can download the new builds straight onto your phone via m.opera.com.

Last week, the company released an Opera Mini 5 beta for Android-based phones, and the low-bandwidth browser is also available as a beta on Windows Mobile. Opera has demoed a version for the Apple iPhone, but the company has yet to actually submit it to the Jobsian gatekeepers guarding the iPhone App Store.

Currently, the App Store offers only third-party browsers that use the same WebKit rendering engine as Apple's own Safari browser, and the iPhone SDK forbids applications from interpreting their own code. But because Opera Mini leans on proxy servers for code execution, the company believes Apple will eventually accept it onto the Jesus Phone.

But official submission to the store won't happen any time soon. Opera has indicated to The Reg that it will not submit it at least until after it's demoed at the CTIA wireless trade show in Las Vegas later this month.

The company also offers a tool known as Opera Link, which lets you synchronize bookmarks, speed dials and notes across multiple browsers running on disparate devices. It works in tandem with Opera Mini as well as Opera Mobile. ®
