Lib Dem candidate admits to unnatural vice

She once supported Labour

The political blogosphere is getting itself all lathered up about the orientation of adult film producer and Lib Dem parliamentary hopeful, Anna Arrowsmith, aka Anna Span.

No, not that sort of orientation. Unfortunately for Anna, an old and now defunct page on an old and defunct website has her down as supporting the Labour Party. It says: "Anna is liberal and open-minded but politically she supports The Labour Party, for all its sins. Anna lives in Soho, London."

This is just a tad embarrassing for someone now aspiring to be elected to parliament as a member of a rival party.

The explanation is, of course, fairly straightforward and a salutary reminder to anyone who employs a web designer to update their website and doesn’t insist that old pages come down entirely – as opposed to just removing the links to the old version and leaving the page orphaned, but still up on the site.

The clue - to those interested in reporting Anna’s current political stance - lies in the opening paragraph on the embarrassing page, which starts "Anna Span (32)..."

Whilst we acknowledge the distinct lack of chivalry involved in revealing this, Anna is now 38. Speaking to El Reg this evening, she agreed that she had once been a member of the Labour Party – a fact that she has never hidden from anyone. However, she objected strenuously to the UK government’s decision to invade Iraq, marched with the opposition to that war, and left the party at about the same time.

The most recent version of the webpage on the site in question has Anna down as 37 (just a year out of date) and a member of the Liberal Democrat Party.

Still, the small matter of contemporary accuracy is of little import when it comes to politics, and the political bloggers have spent today circling, in the hope of landing a fatal blow. Arch-Tory blogger Iain Dale is cock-a-hoop about this supposedly embarrassing discovery – as well as pouring gentle scorn on the very idea that someone who has worked in the adult film industry can have anything to offer the electorate.

Strangely, Dale appears to require a great deal more convincing when faced with a rather more embarrassing revelation that the wife of Tory Leader, David Cameron may once have voted Labour. ®
