Sepaton in anti-Data Domain pitch

Criticising the pain of single-silo deduplication products, Sepaton has introduced a dual-node clustered product that can be upgraded to its larger ES2 system.

The MS2 is described as rack-ready and has from 36 to 192TB of raw capacity, meaning 30 to 160TB of usable capacity. Data ingest can occur at 1,200MB/sec. It comes with version 5.3 of Sepaton's DeltaStor software and its remote replication add-on, DeltaRemote. The upgraded software is said improve capacity optimisation and bandwidth utilisation for remote replication, making that more effective.

Sepaton CEO and chairman Mike Worhach talked of customers "experiencing up to a doubling of capacity optimisation with this release" in a canned statement.

The anti-Data Domain pitch is that Data Domain products are stand-alone and cannot be clustered or share a deduplication index like the Sepaton nodes can. Sepaton isn't a pure inline deduplicating product, as Data Domain is. It starts deduplication once a certain amount of raw data has landed on the S2100 hardware. Data Domain CEO Frank Slootman has said a multi-node product is coming.

The new DeltaStor software adds support for EMC's NetWorker backup software (versions 7.3, 7.4, and 7.5) alongside the existing Symantec NetBackup, IBM TSM and HP Data Protector support. Additional backup software support can be expected in the future, as can the possible addition of a file access interface to the Sepaton data repository.

The MS2 is aimed at medium-sized businesses and is priced from $321,000. It and the new software are available immediately. The DeltaRemote software starts at $11,000 a node. ®
