The Hurt Locker sweeps Oscars

Cameron 3, Bigelow 6

Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker came away from the Oscars last night with six statuettes - double the number which Avatar secured for James Cameron's trophy cabinet.

The Hurt Locker emerged as a clear winner of the 82nd Academy Awards, taking Directing, Film Editing, Best Picture, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Original Screenplay. Bigelow's recognition as best director marks the first such award for a woman, and she was moved to describe the honour as "the moment of a lifetime".

Before the ceremony, Cameron said of former wife Bigelow: "I've extolled her virtues to the world and supported her as a film-maker. I'd be tremendously proud if she won."

In the end, Avatar had to make do with Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects laurels, while JJ Abrams' Star Trek beamed up the Makeup Oscar.

On the thesp front, Sandra Bullock pulled off a double whammy over the weekend, walking out of Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre with the best actress Oscar for The Blind Side, a day after she got the worst actress Razzie for All About Steve.

Best actor Oscar went to veteran Jeff Bridges for his role in Crazy Heart. The Razzie equivalent was awarded to "All Three Jonas Brothers" for their part in The Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience.

Although Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen was not destined for Oscar glory, the helmsman will have to find space on his mantelpiece for the Worst Picture, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay Razzies.

The full list of Oscar winners is here, and the Razzie manifest of shame is here. ®
