Virgin offers cut-price data roaming in Europe

Buy a 'Travel Pass' and save

Virgin Media today launched new packages to allow its mobile customers send and receive data in Europe rather more cheaply than they have been able to so far.

According to Virgin's roaming rates, its punters are currently billed £5 for every megabyte of data they send and receive while abroad.

That rate applies to both pay-as-you-go and pay-monthly customers.

From today, however, they can buy "Travel Passes" that provide a capped transfer total during a fixed usage period for a much lower pound-per-megabyte rate. The Passes only operate within EU countries.

Mobile broadband users can buy one-, three-, seven- or 30-day passes for £10, £15, £30 and £60, respectively. The data cap is calculated on a 1MB:£1 ratio - so the £60 pass gets you 60MB of data, for example.

Activating a mobile broadband pass is SMS based: text BUY + pass name - 1DAY, 3DAY etc - to 23456.

Virgin also said it was offering two "mobile internet" passes - one hour for £4 with a 3MB cap, and 24 hours for £6 with a 5MB cap - for folk access the internet on their phones.

To activate a mobile internet EU Travel Pass, customers must text BUY + pass name - 24HR or 1HR - to 23456. ®
