CollabNet chews up scrum dev house

Danube Technologies down the hatch

CollabNet is stuffing scrum into its web-hosted development arsenal with the purchase of Danube Technologies, a maker of scrum-based project management software.

Distributed development specialist CollabNet claims that more and more organizations are keen on the scrum method of breaking down the development process into continuous, short sprints to accommodate project changes or a customer's whims rather than the traditional prescriptive upgrade plan that can lump together months or even years of work.

Danube vends ScrumWorks Pro software for these so-called agile software development projects, which allows users to manage their product's release cycle and progress at a team level. It also provides scrum training and consulting services. Terms of the acquisition - announced Monday - were not disclosed.

CollabNet serves a web-hosted application lifecycle management platform called TeamForge, which has made its mark in the open source community.

"Scrum is the method of managing project teams whereas CollabNet is managing software development," CollabNet CEO, Bill Portelli told El Reg. "Of course, you need to marry the method of managing project teams with a method of the performing software. The market is moving toward this method of scrum project techniques to the underlying software assets."

Portelli said Danube will operate as an independent unit of CollabNet. It will continue to sell ScrumWorks separately from Teamforge along with training and consulting services. A combined solution is expected to be offered in the second quarter of this year. ®
