Apple, Microsoft fingered for patent infringement by Emblaze

Streaming tech under spotlight

Microsoft and Apple were hit with an infringement claim yesterday from Emblaze, after the Israeli tech outfit accused the companies of violating its streaming media US patent.

At the same time Emblaze, which owns Magic Software and Matrix IT, offered Microsoft and Apple the opportunity to licence the technology, reports Reuters.

The firm alleged that Microsoft’s IIS Smooth Streaming system and Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming Application used its technology without any such agreement to do so.

Emblaze said Apple and Microsoft had been served notices to respond to its infringement claims by 15 March this year.

Microsoft uses the Smooth Streaming tech in its Silverlight software, while Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming can be found in its iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad as well as the the Mac OS X Snow Leopard platform, said Emblaze. ®
