UK moob jobs rocket 80 per cent

Male plastic surgery on the up-and-up

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (or BAAPS, phnar, phnar) has reported a massive rise in gynaecomastia ops last year, as lardy chaps moved to reduce their swelling moobs.

The total number of men going under BAAPS members' knives for a breast reduction in 2009 was 581, meaning the procedure is now the third most popular bit of nip-and-tuck for males.

Nose jobs still top the lads' league table, with 877 opting for some quick rhinoplasty, followed by the 616 who benefited from eyelid treatment, aka blepharoplasty. Overall, men underwent 3,623 procedures last year, a rise of 21 per cent on 2008.

Mr Rajiv Grover, consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS member, noted: “This year we have recorded a dramatic rise in a number of male surgical procedures, probably due to heightened media attention, which has allowed men to realise the positive outcomes that can be achieved."

Blokes are still way behind women, though, who racked up 32,859 visits to the plastic surgeon, including 8,537 breast augmentations.

Bulgarian airbags continue to be the most popular operation for the gals, followed by eyelids (4,827) and breast reduction (4,122).

Overall, "36,482 surgical procedures were carried out by BAAPS members in 2009, a 6.7 per cent increase from 2008, when 34,187 were performed". You can get your hands on the full BAAP's figures here. ®
