Third Ruby-on-Rails beta nears launch

With added Merb

A beta for the third iteration of the wildly popular Ruby on Rails is due later this month or in early February.

Rails founder David Heinemeier Hansson told InfoWorld the feature-completed beta would pave the way for general release in the first quarter of the year.

Among features planned for Ruby on Rails 3 are Merb, the model-view controller framework that's being merged with Ruby on Rails.

Merb is touted as being fast and lightweight because it uses a system of plug-ins to provide particular features rather than delivering a library that aims to be all encompassing. The merger was announced in December 2008. You can read more here.

Other Ruby on Rails 3 features are expected to include protection against cross-site scripting attacks in code and backwards compatibility with existing applications written using Ruby on Rails. ®
