Sky talks up subscription 3D merits

"Other broadcasters” only offering 3D taster, apparently

Channel 4’s week-long 3D TV spectacular only started last night, but rival broadcaster Sky has already chipped in with its opinion on how viewers should experience 3D in their living rooms.

While Sky told Register Hardware that it isn’t “blasting” C4’s 3D TV week, a spokesperson for the subscription-only broadcaster said...ahem...“other broadcasters” are only offering viewers a “3D TV taster” by using anaglyph technology and current generation sets.

C4’s 3D service – due to end on 22 November – employs Danish ColorCode technology, requiring viewers to wear special glasses with amber and blue filter lenses.

The amber filter relays colour information and the blue filter helps create that 3D depth of field.

Sky plans to launch a dedicated 3D channel next year, for which subscribers will need a 3D-ready TV and be forced to don polarising glasses. The service’s resolution is expected to sit somewhere between SD and 1080p.

The service, Sky hinted, will be more advanced than “the red and green glasses of the 1980s”. ®
