IT workers top UK inertia league

Too much coffee, too little exercise

Personal training outfit Fat Free Fitness has shockingly revealed that the UK's IT workers top the nation's inertia league - drinking too much coffee and doing way too little exercise.

A probe of 1,734 employees found idle IT so-and-sos are Blighty's least energetic, with just 19 per cent meeting the gov's activity guidelines recommending 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week.

The survey also showed a mere 14 per cent reckon they tuck into the healthy five pieces of fruit and/or veg a day, while their coffee intake tops the UK league at an average of 10 cups a day. That, of course, is more than the recommended 800mg top whack of caffeine daily, or eight cups.

Next up on the list of shame are receptionists, followed by salespeople and checkout operators. Bricklayers* are apparently among the most saintly, an honour they share with... fitness instructors.

Fat Free Fitness's founder, Rich Leigh, apparently reading from a Department of the Bleedin' Obvious statement, said: "There is clearly a correlation between sitting at a desk or wheel all day and how active you're likely to be." ®

Bootnote

* We hasten to add this is regarding exercise, not diet. Try this unlikely scenario... Cafe owner to brickie: "Full English breakfast with double bubble, extra black pudding and eight fried slices?" Brickie: "No thanks, mate. I'll have the rocket salad with a soupçon of olive oil dressing and a sparkling mineral water, thanks."
