Nokia transmits digital telly phone

UK appearance unlikely?

Nokia has developed a “Mobile TV Edition” of its 5330 handset, allowing users to watch telly on the phone while on the go.

The 5330 Mobile TV Edition isn’t Nokia’s first DVB-H device – that award goes to 2005’s N92 – yet still apparently displays “broadcast picture quality” on its 2.4in display.

DVB-H is a handset-specific version of the DVB-T technology that powers Freeview in the UK.

The 3.5mm-jack headset bundled with the phone is the TV antenna, Nokia said, and a reminder feature should ensure you don’t forget your favourite shows. The phone also boasts an electronic programme guide, Nokia added.

The Finnish phone firm said the phone’s battery should hold out long enough for you to watch up to six hours of mobile telly, while the handset’s 3.2Mp camera and media player will keep you entertained when not glued to the box.

A launch date for the Mobile TV Edition of the 5330 phone hasn’t been confirmed, but the phone’s expected to cost roughly €155 (£139/$232).

Is a UK appearance likely? Doesn't seem so. After DVB-H trials were conducted in Oxford and Cambridge three years ago or so, none of the major operators appear to be rushing to offer mobile telly services here. ®
