iPhone-shunning Wintel mobo bug squashed (for some)

Two motherboard manufacturers have issued BIOS updates designed to fix a bug that prevents certain Wintel mobos from talking to the iPhone.

Late last month The Reg reported that some motherboards based on the Intel P55 Express chipset were exhibiting problems when attempting to sync with Apple's iPhone while running Windows 7 64-bit.

That problem is now being solved for motherboards manufactured by Gigabyte and Asus.

Gigabyte released new BIOS versions for their GA-P55 series motherboards between November 6 and 9, which - among other enhancements - are reported by the company to "Fix iphone sync issue". Those new BIOS versions can be downloaded here.

Over on the Apple Discussions forums, where we first discovered the original problem, posters are reporting that the Gigabyte BIOS update does, indeed, solve the problem.

Two posters also note that the latest BIOS updates for their Asus P7P55D and Maximus III Formula motherboards also turned the trick. Those BIOS versions have been recently updated as well - one as recently as today - and can be obtained from that company's download service.

MSI didn't immediately respond to our request for information on BIOS fixes for their P55-based products, but it's worth keeping an eye on the company's downloads page to check for updates.

An Intel spokesman contacted by The Reg about the P55 Express problem told us that "Intel recommends end users ensure they have latest BIOS and driver updates from their system and motherboard vendors."

Reasonable advice - and effective, it seems. ®
