Apple posts iPhone update

Wireless and wake-from-sleep (not) woes fixed

Apple has released a firmware update for the iPhone which supposedly fixes several “sporadic” and “intermittent” bugs in version 3.1 of the handset's system software.

Firmware 3.1.2 fixes several iPhone bugs

Version 3.1.2 supersedes version 3.1, which was released back in early September. Since then iPhone users have made a whole heap of complaints about the software.

Apple's discussion boards and other websites have been packed with posts from punters who have claimed their handsets have inexplicably slipped into an unresponsive "Coma Mode". Others have had trouble making and taking calls, some experience Wi-Fi woes and more.

Poor battery life has been cited rather a lot too. Last month, Apple took the unusual step of directly engaging with grumbling users and asked them to help nail down this particular issue.

According to Apple’s notes, the latest version resolves a “sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep”, an “intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart” and “fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming”.

As usual, Apple hasn’t gone into any greater detail about the contents of its latest iPhone update. So you’ll just have to download it and hope that 3.1.2 does what the firm claims.

To get the update, simply connect your iPhone into iTunes. ®
