Toshiba to demo 3D, 4K2K Cell-based HD TVs

More telly roles for PS3 processor

Toshiba’s most advanced Regza TV yet – the 55X1 - will launch before Christmas. But the firm isn’t resting on its laurels, planning to surpass full HD resolution and to bring 3D content to the range.

At CEATEC, Japan’s largest consumer electronics show, which kicks off toay, Toshiba will showcase working models of future Cell Regza TVs demoing potential future features.

Arguably the most exciting feature of all will be Regza 3D, which Toshiba described as a “future version of the Cell Regza platform [that] will process 2D images into more lifelike 3D”.

An integrated infrared sensor will also allow users to search for and navigate recorded content using hand gestures, Toshiba promised.

Think of it like Microsoft's 'Project Natal' for telly. Toshiba shouldn't hang about. Philips has already introduced such a system, this time using a generic remote control. And Hitachi has already shown off a gesture-controlled TV.

Toshiba also hopes to go one better than full HD by doubling Regza’s resolution from 1920 x 1080p to a whopping 3840 x 2160p – which it’s calling "4K2K panel performance".

Manufacturers have talked about a 4K2K resolution before, and the HDMI 1.4 spec has already been created to cater for it.

Finally, Toshiba will also show off 37in and 46in Regza sets – both of can be hooked into the Cell Regza's dedicated tuner and HDD housing known as Cell Box. ®
