Managing the Windows desktop estate: Your view

Tell us what you really think

Reg Reader Studies Some things in life, it is often considered, should ‘just work’ - and so it is for the desktop and laptop PCs (the majority running Windows) that are in general use across organisations of all sizes. Pity the poor person who has to keep these facilities running, often in the face of complete disinterest from the users themselves, apart from the occasional panicked, even angry phone call should things dare to go wrong.

We’ve had your stories about the kind of calls you may have had from your user base, for some of whom the best advice can only be: “Put it back in the box, because you are clearly too stupid to actually use a computer.”

But now we’d like to broach the subject of what’s actually going on behind the scenes. What are the main challenges when it comes to running desktop PC environments in companies large and small?

We could hazard a few guesses.

We know that patch management is a major issue for example, but is it more of a challenge than managing the increasing numbers of remote and mobile users? What mechanisms are helping make things easier, and what only seem to get in the way?

What about upgrades of both hardware and software – in these still-turbulent economic times, are you sitting on your wallets or looking to spend money to save on management of old kit? Did you ever get to Vista, and indeed, is Windows 7 yet on the cards?

If you’re involved in management and operations of desktop computing facilities, or you know someone who is, we would be very interested in your views, which we shall be feeding back to you over the coming weeks.

It’s time the voices of desktop operations were heard. ®
