Sonic the Hedgehog to make 2D comeback

Old-school Sonic fans' wish granted

He’s blue, a hedgehog and – from next year – will be back in 2D, Sega has announced.

The videogame developer has released a teaser trailer for Sonic’s latest adventure, which will see the spiky mammal return to his two-dimensional roots in a title codenamed 'Project Needle Mouse'.

Which consoles Sonic will return to isn’t yet known, but it’s worth noting that 2010 comes nine years since Sega’s Dreamcast console was discontinued in North America. The console was launched in 1998. Sonic himself first appeared in 1991.

Sega explained to gaming website CVG that its decision to turn Sonic back into a 2D character was based on pleas from “old-school Sonic fans” longing for a return to the character’s classic gaming style. ®
