LG to unwrap OLED screens by Christmas

Firm talks up OLED delivery

Think OLED telly manufacturers and you’d be forgiven thinking solely of Sony. But LG-branded OLEDs are just months away, the firm’s confirmed.

LG executive Amitabh Tiwari has told website The Hindu Business Line that its OLED displays “should be here by end of 2009”.

His comment builds on an LG promise from last year to punch out 32in OLED TVs in volume by 2011.

By contrast, Toshiba has already pledged to bring a 30in OLED model to market this year. While Samsung’s planning to roll out 13in OLED screens by 2010, in addition to 40in and 42in panels in 2010.

Tiwari didn’t mention anything about OLED screen sizes, contrast ratios or features. But he did add that LG “OLEDs might cost 2.1 times the price of an LCD”.

Which size OLED screens LG will choose to enter the market with remains to be seen. But - given that Sony last week displayed a 21in OLED screen in Japan – it’s reasonable to assume that LG will follow suit. ®
