Spd improves mobile TV experience

Still spd all to watch, though

Spd, publishers of the shell UI that makes Windows Mobile an easier pill to swallow, have launched a stand-alone streaming TV player, offering great usability and features but not a lot in the way of content.

Spd TV is a genuinely impressive TV viewing experience, with picture in picture, transparent, finger-friendly controls, fast channel switching and a programme guide that enables one to quickly establish there is nothing worth watching on the limited range of channels available, making the application technically impressive, but ultimately pointless.

Spd TV does demonstrate the irrelevance of mobile broadcast standards: if one wanted to watch TV on the move then this application proves the experience can be smooth and integrated. It will even put reminders into one's diary when items are selected in the programme guide. But the thing that makes Spd TV worth less than the $14.95 it costs is the limited range of channels available. The BBC iPlayer might not provide the same smooth experience, but it is good enough and actually offers content one might want to watch.

A demo for Windows Mobile is available from Spd, and is worth seeing for the pretty interface, but users will need more than a pretty interface to be convinced that mobile TV is worth having. ®
