GM in-car kit team says no to drive'n'Twitter tech

Mirror, signal, Tweet?

Exclusive Rumours that in-car communications firm OnStar had designed a gadget for updating Twitter feeds from your car, using voice recognition technology, are false, the company has confirmed.

Over the past few days online reports, blogs and even Twitter streams began overflowing with rumours that the firm – owned by General Motors – has designed an in-car gadget that could let drivers Tweet'n’drive.

It was also rumoured that the wireless device would grab updates from a friend’s Twitter feed and read them out to you as you steer you way through traffic.

Sadly though, none of this is true. Speaking exclusively to Register Hardware, a spokeswoman for the firm said that the rumours emerged after it asked customers in a recent survey about their thoughts for such a device.

One blogger, who’s also an OnStar customer, then wrongly reported that the firm was planning to launch such a gadget, the spokeswoman added.

We have to admit that the idea sounds pretty good, though. And, judging by the online reception that the rumour generated, many others think so too.

But there could be a glimmer of hope for voice-activated in-car Twittering, because the OnStar spokeswoman added that the device “is a rumour... for now”. ®
