Call of Duty kicks Grand Theft Auto at awards night

Game biz hands out gongs

Winning an Oscar’s the pinnacle for actors and their films, but the videogame industry’s finest were recognised in London last night at the British Academy Video Games Awards.

One of the night’s biggest losers was Register Hardware favourite Grand Theft Auto IV. It went away empty handed, despite being nominated in several categories, including Best Game, Gameplay and Action, and Adventure.

Probably the most prestigious award, Best Game, went to Super Mario Galaxy. Spore scooped the Technical Achievement award.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was one of the night’s biggest winners, scooping awards in several categories, including Gameplay, and Story and Character.

The event’s winners were decided by BAFTA members and roughly 200 industry experts. The awards' sponsor, High Street retailer Game, awarded a gong of its own, voted on by the public, which was also won by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Other winning titles included Dead Space for Use of Audio, Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution for Strategy, and Race Driver: GRID in the Sports category. ®
