BlackBerry Bold sales suspended in Japan

Some handsets heat up too when re-charged

Some would say that the BlackBerry Bold’s a hot bit of kit. But few would think it's so hot that Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo would decide to suspend sales of the phone because of complaints about the handset's temperature.

But that's what has happened. The network took the drastic step late last week because it received complaints from around 30 Bold users that the device’s keyboard gets too hot.

DoCoMo has sold some 4000 Bolds since the handset went on sale in Japan on 20 February - just seven days before the suspension.

The operator said it hadn’t received any reports of the phone actually catching fire or causing injury. The problem is thought to manifest itself when the Bold is charging.

Maker Research in Motion (RIM) claimed that the problem is limited to Bolds sold in Japan. It said that Bolds sold elsewhere in the world are unaffected. ®
