Eff off, iPod

Philips has unveiled two Portable Media Players (PMPs) that will have anti-iPod fans everywhere jumping for joy.

Philips' GoGear Opus: has a 2.8in screen and noise-isolating cans

GoGear Opus has a 2.8in, 320 x 240 display, while the GoGear Ariaz makes do with a smaller, 2in screen. Opus will come in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB flavours, and Ariaz - horrible name - will be offered in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacities.

Opus packs in Bluetooth and support for the BBC’s iPlayer telly service. Ariaz can function as a dictaphone – thanks to the integrated microphone – and can also pick up FM radio broadcasts.

The PMP duo support a wide range of audio formats, including MP3 and WMA, and MPEG 4 video. Philips will ship Opus with a pair of noise-reducing headphones, which should hopefully drown out background audio annoyances.

Both models will be available in the UK this April. Opus’ prices will range between €99 (£87/$124) and €179 (£158/$225), while Ariaz will cost between €79 (£69/$99) and €129 (£114/$162). ®
