McDonalds to cook up EV charging station network

'Leccy Tech McDonald's of Sweden is going to start serving electricity as well as the usual Big Mac and fries, according to Elforsk, an electricity R&D operation co-owned by Svensk Energi (Swedenergy) and Svenska Kraftnät - the Swedish national grid.

Elforsk will develop and manage the power network, while Ronald McDonald will pay for the charge posts and their installation.

No mention was made of how much recharging a 'leccy vehicle from the McCharger is likely to cost.

The first 230V, 16A pilot post is scheduled to be installed at a Stockholm McDonald's in the next few months. Each post has both a single- and a three-phase charge socket.

Elforst has a SKr10m ($1.13m/£794,000/€898,000) budget to support the McProject over the next two years and is working with charge-post maker Eldon on ways to reduce recharge times.

Currently the UK has around 1200 McDonalds eateries – sorry, but we simply cannot bring ourselves to call them restaurants – of which 740 odd have drive-through sales windows and some sort of parking facility. ®
