Sky demonstrates 3D telly vision

Future of broadcasting from the 50s

BSkyB yesterday demonstrated 3D broadcasts using an ordinary Sky+HD box and a TV made by Hyundai.

Viewers will need to wear special glasses and Sky made clear it was not planning a product launch.

The demo included clips of a Ricky Hatton fight, football and rugby clips. The boxing was most impressive, although the glasses did make people look a bit silly,Techradar notes.

The site also said that there was a difficulty with images of objects which overlap the edge of the screen.

Footage is created by using two cameras rigged to a moveable mirror so costs are not prohibitive.

Sky described the technology as a natural enhancement to its HD infrastructure. With increasing competition, both online and offline, Sky badly needs to find compelling reasons for consumers to keep paying their monthly subs.

3D is slated to hit cinemas next year, with Hollywood powerhouse Dreamworks promising a slew of digital 3D movies next Spring. At least that was the plan. With the economy falling off a cliff since the studio and Intel announced their back to the future plan, cinemas are now said to be balking at the costs of kitting themselves out for the new tech. Similar technology - which is based on polarising glasses - should eventually find its way into the home.®
