Enterprise VoIP soars despite Meltdown

IP phone shipments up 25 per cent

Despite The Meltdown, enterprise VoIP is on the rise.

According to research firm Infonetics, IP phone shipments were up 25 per cent in Q3, while IP softphone shipments more than doubled from Q2. The telephony market as a whole increased by 8 per cent over the quarter, reaching $2.6bn, with pure IP PBX and hybrid PBX equipment sales up and TDM PBX equipment sales down.

Infonetics predicts the TDM segment will drop below the $1bn mark for the first time in 2008. And the outlook isn't terribly cheery for 2009.

"The enterprise telephony market more than likely will get squeezed during the recession, particularly in 2009 because one of the prime drivers of PBX sales is the creation of new businesses and the expansion of existing businesses, which are hampered during downturns," the firm stated.

However, it added that in some segments like the pure IP PBX segment are presently benefiting from new product launches and IP softphones, which have enjoyed healthy uptake in recent quarters and shouldn't be killed by the economic conditions.

Although most enterprise telephony suppliers struggled to hold the line in 2008, Cisco managed to phone-in its best performance yet, according to Infonetics.

For the first time, the networking giant took the lead in overall PBX equipment with a 19 per cent revenue gain in Q3 versus Q2.

Avaya is now placed second place in terms of revenue in the worldwide PBX equipment market, with a 10 per cent jump in revenue in Q3. Nortel now occupies the third-place spot.

"Cisco is the only vendor gaining significant market share in this market in 2008; most other vendors are holding steady or decreasing slightly," Infonetics said in a press release. ®
