Toshiba touts talking projector

"Buy me, buy me, buy me," I said.

Did that projector just talk to me? At least that’s what you’ll say when you walk past the world’s first projector with voice guidance.

Toshiba's TLP-X200U: can talk to you

The Toshiba TLP-X200U Wi-Fi enabled three-LCD projector can give users spoken instructions for all sorts of functions, such as how to set it up. It'll also speak out warning messages - for example, it can tell you the status of the cooling fan and whether the air filter needs checking.

Toshiba designed the “special voice guidance [feature] to help reduce projector maintenance costs”, said Toshiba's Jane Poon. Presumably, if a projector can tell you what the problem is, you don’t need to pay a technician £75 an hour to fiddle with its cables.

The TLP-X200U can produce 1024 x 768 resolution images with a brightness of up to 3000 ANSI lumens. It has a 600:1 contrast ratio and a dedicated setting for projecting onto a blackboard.

You can hook up to four TLP-X200U projectors together to create either a supersize image or two different screen images from one PC source.

Elsewhere on the projector you’ll find a USB port and an HDMI connection.

Toshiba’s TLP-X200U talking projector is available now in the US for $1740 (£1100/€1365). A UK release date or price hasn’t been projected onto the wall yet.
