3 launches second-gen Skypephone

Call for free, in style

Skype and network operator 3 obviously think they’re onto a winner with the Skypephone, so the duo’s teamed-up again to launch the brand’s second handset.

The Skypephone S2 has a higher resolution screen and HSDPA

Although the new handset features the same Skype connectivity as before, the new Skypephone S2 builds on the earlier model’s 176 x 220 pixel display and two-megapixel camera by featuring a 2.2in, 320 × 240 screen and 3.2-megapixel snapper.

The S2 has 50MB of internal memory, but also accepts Micro SDHC cards of up to 4GB.

HSDPA connectivity is possible through the S2, and the two firms are obviously keen to get users hooked on mobile surfing because applications like Facebook and Windows Live Messenger, in addition to Google, have been brought to the front of the phone.

Users access the apps through a “revolutionary carousel interface” whereby a switcher key on the side of the phone lets users “quickly and intuitively” switch between applications. Something that sounds very similar to the Aero function in Windows Vista.

The Skypephone S2 will be available online from 27 August and from 3’s high street stores on 1 September. The phone costs £70 ($130/€88) on PAYG and is free when bought with a contract costing at least £15 per month.
