Retailer 'recalls' PSP Go!Cam

Some sale of Sony's PlayStation Portable’s Go!Cam have allegedly been halted over fears that the add-on could overheat and potentially cause a fire.

According to a report by PSP Fanboy, an unnamed Japanese supplier of the clip-on camera – which is called Chotto Shot in Japan – told one buyer that it has had “reports that some of these units have been running extremely hot, and have emitted a burning smell”.

The distributor's understandably worried that “this could lead to the even more serious event of a fire starting from the unit”. As a result, the firm’s issued a product recall to anyone who bought a Chotto Shot from it after 1 July this year.

It said Sony is "aware of the problem", though the recall does not appear to have been initiated by the consumer electronics giant, and Sony has yet to make an official comment on the claim or confirm the issue.

Sony unveiled the PSP camera in May 2007 and it later went on sale in Europe for around £35 (€50/$70). The camera’s still widely available online.

The Go!Cam has a 180° rotatable lens, a 1.3-megapixel image sensor and an on-board microphone to capture sound. The camera slots into the PSP’s upper-facing USB port, with a screw lock to hold it in place.
