Toshiba, Panasonic partner to make mini OLEDs
But keeping telly tech to themselves
Toshiba and Panasonic are to together spend ¥15bn ($140m) to further develop OLED display technology. And they've formed a joint venture to handle the work.
The JV, Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology, will focus on small displays for handhelds and in-car systems, specifically 2.5in screens. The partners said their offspring would be punching out 1m panels a month by the end of 2009.
It will not be working on larger screens that can be used in TVs, the company said. That's probably because both Toshiba and Panasonic are doing so in their own right.
Toshiba owns 60 per cent of the JV, Panasonic the rest.
