Sony will fix PS3s bricked by 2.40 update

Sony claims that only a “limited number" of PS3 owners were affected by the infamous v2.40 firmware, but Sony has said it'll replace any console hardware that was nuked by the update.

The company told a number of websites that it’s working with “impacted PS3 users” to determine if their consoles were damaged as a result of "solely" applying the 2.40 download. If Sony’s update is to blame, then the console will be “repaired or exchanged at no cost” to the gamer.

Sony was forced to pull 2.40 just hours after releasing it when reports came in that the update was playing havoc with some gamers’ machines. For example, one reader told us that the update failed halfway through its installation and then froze his PS3.

A reworked edition of the update – called version 2.41 – has since been released. It promises in-game XMB menu access and a trophies reward function.
