Sony confirms major PS3 firmware update features

Version 2.40 to add in-game XMB

It’s been rumoured that Sony’s set to overhaul the PlayStation 3 with a grand-scale firmware release in the near future, and now the electronics giant has gone on record and confirmed the juicy features gamers can expect.

Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation network operations, recently wrote on the PS3 official blog that version 2.40 will include “XMB access in-game”. This will allow gamers to access the console’s system menu without quitting the current game, which is a big plus if you’re playing a title that takes a lifetime to load, such as Grand Theft Auto IV.

Lempel also confirmed that the update will add a “trophies” feature to the PS3. These are expected to give gamers exclusive graphics that they can show off to other gamers. Think Xbox 360-esque unlocks, essentially.

Unfortunately, the Sony exec didn’t state when the firmware version will arrive, but at least we now know it’s coming.

Prior to version 2.40’s release will be the arrival of version 2.36. Don’t get too excited though, because it’s only really designed to improve “system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles”.
