House of Lords hits YouTube

Old farts get down with the kids

The House of Lords has released a series of short films on YouTube to explain its work.

The five films, released on 13 June 2008, aim to improve understanding of the upper chamber. The first, House of Lords: What's it all about?, is a four-minute film, in which members of the public appear in black and white – some expressing ignorance of the institution, with comments including "I haven't got a clue" – and members of the chamber including Lord Puttnam and Baroness Williams of Crosby appearing in colour, explaining what they do.

One subject includes how the Lords revise and sometimes reject bills from the House of Commons. "Occasionally, we send it back to them, in a game that is known as ping-pong," says Lord Wright of Richmond. "We defeat the government quite regularly, we make them think again," adds Lord Tyler.

Among the other films are coverage of a youth parliament event held in the House of Lords, and a visit by Baroness Hayman, the speaker of the Lords, to a school in Ealing.

"The videos we have placed on the YouTube channel reflect the diversity and expertise in the House of Lords and its relevance to young people, and we hope that they will help to combat some of the outdated stereotypes of members of the Upper House," said Baroness Hayman.
